Five Amazing Traveling Jobs for Seniors That You Must Try
Have you just retired and want to travel the world? Well, there are countless jobs in places such as hotels, travel agencies, airports, and museums, which is great since even after retirement you can travel and work. The leisure and hospitality sectors are continuing to expand modestly and in the years ahead there are going to be several jobs on offer and it is especially good news for seniors who want to earn some money while traveling the world.
Travel Agent
If you think that travel agents no longer exist, well, you have got it all wrong. Even after there has been a great number of online booking sites on the rise, a lot of growing numbers of travelers want something extra – something that you can call a human touch. As a result, more and more people are opening up home-based businesses.
You’ll also spend time doing research on the phone and doing online research, so this job may require patience, a patient demeanor, and paying attention to detail. It can also nurture your lust for travel with a bit of insider knowledge and enthusiasm. Annual salaries start from $25,484 to $55,364, as per PayScale. Although you may not need any agent license, community colleges sometimes offer technical training. Few colleges may offer full degrees in travel and tourism.
Tour Guide
You can also start working as a tour guide. There are different kinds of guides such as for a day trip, a guide to monuments, a museum guide, art galleries, and all things historical. If communication is your forte then it’s just one of the best jobs for retirees.
A tour guide can last for as many as 10 to 14 days. Although it includes long hours, it can also involve several sights and with tips, the pay can also be pretty impressive. For example, you may be involved in a tour that takes tourists and shows them in and around Italy. It can also help if you learn a foreign language.
Peace Corps
This may not be your usual travel industry job, but it can turn out to be a lucrative one, nevertheless. This way you can even make a difference and lead a more fulfilling life. However, it may not be for everyone. You need to be adaptable and flexible as things can get challenging as you may have to live in a developing country, as you need to get used to a new country, with a new language and everything else, but once you get the drift, you’ll get to enjoy the process even more. Most Peace Corps want to enlist older volunteers. There are nearly 500 volunteers who are older than 50 and are serving in several countries across the world, some of the participants are even in their 80s.
The Peace Corps program may hold special appeal to older people because it offers a shorter period of commitment – the time includes three months to a year. Married couples can apply together, but each of the couples must apply and qualify as a volunteer separately. You may not get a salary but volunteers may receive comprehensive medical and dental benefits. Other financial benefits may include paid travel, housing and living expenses, vacation days, and other allowances. Your qualification includes, you must be a citizen of the United States. You can also be an experienced professional, a licensed physician or nurse, and a returned volunteer.
Management Jobs
If you have experience in management, you may even get leadership positions in the hospitality industry. If you want a more serious challenge, you can take the position of general manager of a hotel or spa. If you prefer the position of supervising you can get the position as a restaurant manager, catering supervisor, cruise director, and more. If you have great organizational skills and have impeccable attention to detail, you may enjoy working as an event manager for conferences and other social events, such as destination weddings.
Well, if you want to give a new spin to your career, then traveling jobs can be the best bet for you. It is not conventional in any way and it takes you out of your comfort zone, but it offers something that you have never tried before. What’s not to like about it?
